Atholl Ransome

Alto and soprano saxophone with Mr. Wilson’s Second Liners.

Atholl is a renowned session musician and composer, specialising in saxophone, flute and sectional arrangements.

As a founding member of The Haggis Horns, this infamous horn section opened a gateway to a jaw-dropping resume of collaborations and live performances, including John Legend & The Roots, Amy Winehouse, Adele, Corinne Bailey Rae, Mark Ronson and Bill Laurence (Snarky Puppy), Kano, Daniel Merriweather, and Martha Reeves and the Vandellas.  Atholl has had opportunities to perform at Glastonbury Festival, The Hyde Park Proms, Montreaux Jazz Festival, and Coachella.

Since 2013, he’s worked with Eastern European folk band, Klonk!, playing a gypsy blend of klezmer and Balkan music. This different palette of rhythms and modes reignited his interest in non-Western music. Subsequently, he’s worked with The Firm Entertainments, a band with traditional Indian dhol players. These different rhythms and harmonies have inspired Atholl’s interest to study further, immersing him in the world of ragas and absorbing the different language and sounds.

In the meantime, Atholl is currently working with a more local community of musicians and bands. He regularly performs with The Abstract Orchestra and Soul Cooker.
